Double Page Spread

This double page spread was featured in ‘Kerrang’ music magazine, Issue November 14th 2009. These two pages may be considered an advertorial, due to the way that the writers have emphasised the band as being “the best”, where they also advertise the band’s new album (by teasing the audience with the “New Tracks” section on the right hand side, and describing the tracks with words like “epic”), set for release next spring, which begins to create a sense of anticipation for fans, where the article both entertains and promotes the band. This positive promotion of the band may also be down to the writer’s ideology about the genre of music and their coherent system of values within modern society.
Language is also used as an advantage to the magazine, differentiated from other music magazines by its unique mode of address to its readers. The way the main picture has been framed, with the singer looking down while on stage, with a serious facial expression, almost reclining away from the audience is again associated with the emotional rock style of the band, and almost conveys an uninviting connotation to the picture, which readers will recognise as being ‘My Chemical Romance’s’ approach to their music. The title of the article is a quote from the band itself, which uses specialised language, such as “MCR”, that only certain groups in society will understand, creating a sense of community within the magazine. Other language used in this short article is often professional within the music industry, relating to the affluence of the young audience that may take an interest in the magazine, yet contains a personal element due to the number of long quotations used, made from an interview with the band. This more professional language, using phrases like “epic grandeur and theatrics of the quintet”, may have been used in order to underline the professionalism of the band itself, and describe the particular, new style of music that the band will adopt in its new album and contrast it with the old style, so that the audience can understand “what’s to come”, and get an exclusive ‘preview’ of it. This type of language is not often included within ‘Kerrang’, because language that is usually used is so that the audience can ‘skim read’ the contents.
All of the factors used to produce a double page spread relate to the ideology of the writer and the publishing company, relating to the set of values that the majority of the audience will have. The producer’s intent is to inform, entertain and change opinion, while making the magazine profitable to the company. Consumers that buy the magazine are of a young audience, who take interest in the particular style of music (emotional rock/punk) that has been adopted by ‘Kerrang’, where they invest their own money and time into the magazine. The medium of presenting magazines that readers can flip through and skip is very important, and must be acceptable for the fans of the bands that are mentioned and contain their interest, adapting to fit the opinions of the niche groups that read it.

CD Cover Research
Throughout my research I have tries to incorporate elements i have seen into my own magazine. I have decided to make a CD cover for my artist so i can display it on either the front page or contents. I have looked at at many varieties and have decided i would like mine to be similar to those displayed below. Each display's a close up of a female artist which directly correspond's to what I want mine to look like.

Katy Perry, Pixie Lott, Cheryl Cole, Beyonce.

Contents Page analysis -This is the contents page for Kerrang magazine. The main contents is on the right hand side and the page is split up into 2 sections and 3 columns. This contents page is more visual than the NME contents page. There is very informal language used as well as expletive language.
The magazine is very rebellious targeting a younger, more rebellious audience range. the editors corner in at the top left flatters the reader as he personally signs it showing he wants to be the readers friend.
The visuals on the page reflect the music genre and the target audience.
The magazine almost promotes expletives and rebel as a positive thing and the magazine hasn't got a harder vocabulary range than NME. this could be because the audience is not as educated. the colours of the magazine are mainly yellow and black. these colours are bold and bright. The yellow is very shocking and can be connoted with lightening which is very bright and dangerous. This may also link to the audience and music as a whole.

This is the contents page of the NME music magazine I analysed. On the right hand side, there is the actual contents of what is in the magazine. This part is split up into different sections making it easy to read and understand.
The language used is very informal and explicit as on the contents page it says, "fucked up" which is an album name but on the front cover it is put in stars.
The section on the side which is split up into columns goes down in ascending page order which also makes it easy to follow. The arrows on the side which say "on the cover" also make it easy to relate to the articles you already know a little about which are on the cover.
On the left hand side, there is a section for a band index. this section has a long list of different bands all in chronological order also making it easy to read and quicker to find a band that you are looking for. making the band list in chronological is time consuming for the reader.
The magazine name which is NME, is kept in the top left hand corner which is in the same place as on the cover. This can be easily identified and follows conventions of a magazine.

My contents page development
For my music magazine, I was required to create a contents page. Upon research I decided to add an editor’s letter, subscription that included an image and addition sources to the magazine as well as a different sections to categorize the many different aspects the music magazine would include. Below is a breakdown of how I created the contents page.I created the contents page on Photoshop. From research of a variety of music magazines I got my main inspiration from ‘Kerrang’.
I feel that the image is not to dominating on the right side of the page, however it still immediately catches the eye which i believe is very effective. I decided to make the contents directly correspond to the front cover. To achieve this I mainly used the same colour scheme of black, grey and red. By linking the two elements of the magazine together enables it to flow better. All the elements I added on the contents page; from cd covers to the editors letter would not look out of place on a real magazine contents page. I created my own stories and features which I believe readers would be interested in. I also incorporated some real events such as the reading festival which ats as good advertisement. Overall I feel the finished article looks very authentic, each element combining to create an attractive and informative second page for 'Ascent' magazine.
